The NHS is struggling to cope with increased hospital demand in the face of dwindling public spending and there is much debate around the viability of home-based care in today’s climate. Our report Hospital care at home looks at how and to what extent providers and commissioners can use home-based hospital care to achieve some of the top-line savings and improved outcomes and patient experience that are demanded of them. Contrary to the typical view that these services would be cost-neutral, we found there were significant cost savings to be made in the following four areas:
- Care for people with selected long-term and ambulatory care sensitive (ACS) conditions
- Enhanced (early) supported discharge
- Chemotherapy at home
- End-of-life care.
